Giro 2024 Route stage 1: Turin - Turin
Saturday 4 May - The Giro d'Italia opens with a 140 kilometres long race featuring five climbs. Both start and finish are in Turin, while the finale is a technical downhill from the short and sharp San Vito climb.
Or, actually, the start is in one of Turin’s most enchanting suburbs, Venaria Reale. The finish will be in the city centre and the riders tackle three climbs. After roughly 50 kilometres the first KOM points are available on the Berzano di San Pietro and almost 30 kilometres later the Superga throws in 4.9 kilometres of climbing at an average gradient of 9.1%.
A rolling section and a descent at shallow gradients leads to the base of the San Vito climb, 1.4 kilometres long and averaging 10%. A short drop to the first passage on the line precedes the Colle della Maddalena, a 6.1 kilometres long drag with an average gradient of 7.4%. It’s 32 kilometres from the summit back to the finish line Turin’s city centre.
The riders descent to the sprint for time bonuses in Moncalieri and 5 kilometres later the San Vito is tackled again. The punchy climb is crested with 2.9 kilometers remaining. That’s all downhill on a road with some tricky twists and turns.
It’s the second Grande Partenza in Turin in four years time. In 2021, the pink caravan set off from the fourth largest city in Italy with an individual time trial. Filippo Ganna took the first maglia rosa in that edition ahead of Edoardo Affini and Tobias Foss.
Turin was also included in 2022. The 14th stage was a demanding hilly race with several passages through town before finishing there as well. Simon Yates took the spoils that day. The Superga and Colle della Maddalena were also tackled, but from another side.
The second and third intermediate sprint come with 3, 2 and 1 seconds, while the first three riders on the line gain 10, 6 and 4 seconds.
