World Cycling Championships 2023: Route Mixed Relay
Tuesday 8 August - The Mixed Relay is a time trial with mixed teams. Nations enter six riders, three men and three women, and the team that crosses the line quickest after 40.3 kilometers of racing with 483 metres of climbing wins.
The route overlaps with the Glasgow circuit of the road races, so there’s a lot of twist and turns and short and sharp ramps to be conquered. Which is especially hard on a time trial machine.
Last year’s mixed relay was a nailbiter with Switzerland besting Italy by 2 seconds, while Australia came in third at 38 seconds. The Swiss’ succeeded Germany and the Netherlands, who won the mixed relay in 2021 and 2019, respectively. Before that, the TTT at the Worlds was raced by sponsored teams.
Switzerland is the absolute favourite to win again. All their ITT stars line up, while Italy’s Filippo Ganna – who was the engine last year – is focussing on the track.
There is only one intermediate time check, when the men finish and the women start, so exactly halfway.
