World Cycling Championships 2015 Richmond: Route road race

World Championships Cycling 2015 RichmondHow do American cobble stones look like? And how will they feel? On Sunday every cycling enthusiast will know, since the World Championships in Richmond are on a route with short climbs and cobbled sectors. Tour of Flanders American style…

The route is a local round of 16.5 kilometres. The first cobbled sector is called Shockoe Slip and is about halfway the circuit. After racing along the channel and passing Great Shiplock Park the riders arrive at E-main street. This 350 meter long uphill stretch brings the riders – to the narrow climb up in the Libby Hill Park. This climb is also covered with cobbled stones with a length of 250 meters.

A quick descent, followed by three hard turns leads to a 110 meter-climb up 23rd Street, partially cobbled and with a 20% maximum gradient toughest of the four climbs in the last 4.5 kilometres of each round.

After a drop to Shockoe Bottom a 350-meter climb up Governor Street awaits the riders. Once atop a false flat in 680 meters leads to the finish line. And this ‘false’ could easily turn out to be ‘mean’ after 10 or more rounds…

Richmond is on the east coast of the US, as the crow flies 460 kilometres south of New York City.

The race is on at 9 AM (local time), while the finish is expected around 3:40 PM.
