World Cycling Championships 2015 Richmond: Favourites TTT
The team time trial in Richmond totals 38.8 kilometres. These are mostly flat, while the last kilometre is tricky with a 350 metres section at 6.9%, after which a false flat leads to the finish line. Cyclingstage.com brings you the major contenders.
BMC Racing Team
In 2015, the title-holder was victorious in the TTT’s in Critérium du Dauphiné, Tour de France and, most recently, La Vuelta. Tejay van Garderen, Philippe Gilbert and Greg Van Avermaet are left out of the World Championships-team, still there is enough gun-powder aboard with the likes of Rohan Dennis and Taylor Phinney.
Orica-GreenEDGE
In 2012, the Australian squad finished third and in last two editions they raced to second place. After winning this year’s Giro TTT, they fell 1 second short in the Vuelta. Most Orica-riders have a history on the track and they would want a route that’s less hilly in the finale than the one in Richmond.
Team Sky
Kiryienka is the engine in the line-up of the black. The Tour de France TTT was immensely thrilling with BMC besting Sky by 1 second on a route that was similar to the one in Richmond. Froome, Thomas and Porte skip the TTT, thus diminishing the chances Sky’s chances.
Etixx-Quick Step
World Champion in 2012 and 2013, the Etixx-Quick Step brigade boosts Tony Martin, Tom Boonen, Niki Terpstra, Rigoberto Uran and Michal Kwiatkowski – to name a few. But are they still as history says and names imply? Third in the TTT in Ponferrada, while the 2015 season were mostly unremarkable as far as team time trials go.
*** BMC, Orica-GreenEDGE
** Etixx-Quick Step, Tinkoff-Saxo
* LottoNL-Jumbo, Sky, Movistar
