World Cycling Championships 2014 Ponferrada: Favourites ITT
Last three editions Tony Martin was the best of the world. His 'eternal' opposer Fabian Cancallera skips the ITT, leaving Bradley Wiggins as his big rival with youngster Tom Dumoulin on the lookout. Cyclingstage.com brings you the main contenders.
Tony Martin
Title-holder and top-favourite, Der Panzerwagen bested his IT opponents in Tour of the Basque Country, Tour of Belgium, Tour of Switzerland (twice), Tour de France and La Vuelta. In between he took the ITT-championships of his country. It was early this season he lost his last chrono-race in the Tirreno-Adriatico. In Ponferrada he can Cancellara equal in number World Championship titles in the individual time trial.
Bradley Wiggins
Olympic Champion in the discipline, Sir Wiggo won all his stage races thanks to his strong individual time trial, most recent in the Tour of California. Last year in Florence Wiggo was second behind Martin. Reigning Champion of his countryu in the discipline and shining example when it comes to stylish cycling.
Tom Dumoulin
The 23-year old Dutchman is widely seen as the heir to Tony Martin. To his frustration Dumoulin has not been able to best the German ITT-King. who comforted him by saying that he himself had long been confronted with a similar situation when Cancellara was the best of the world. Being national champion ITT of his country, Dumoulin debuts in the ITT World Championships this year.
Adrian Malori
The National Champion of Italy is aiming at the podium. Last spring he bested Cancellara, Wiggins, Dumoulin and Martin in the (short) ITT of the Tirreno-Adriatico.
