Torrevieja hosted the Gran Salida of the Vuelta for men four years ago. Most notable was the crash of pre-race favourite Roglic’ squad Jumbo-Visma, which was caused by a burst paddling pool a few hundred metres up the hill. Let’s hope all swimming pools retain their water. Fortunately, that’s very likely, as it’s usually not that hot in Alicante provence in early May.
Last year’s Vuelta for women opened with a team time trial on the Cantabrian coast. Trek-Segafredo was the fastest squad and Elisa Longo Borghini the first GC leader.
Torrevieja lies next to Las Salinas de Torrevieja, a Natural Park with pink-hued water lagoons, which is caused by microscopic algae producing beta carotene. So effectually it would make a perfect starting venue for the Giro or Giro Donne.
