Vuelta 2025 Route stage 5: Figueres - Figueres

Vuelta a España 2025Wednesday, 27 August - On the fifth day, the riders tackle the first of two individual time trials in this year’s Vuelta. The course is 20 kilometres long, mostly flat with some gentle undulations, and a gradual rise of around 5% towards the finish.

The Vuelta a España turns 90 this year, but even earlier, another major Spanish stage race, the Volta a Catalunya, visited Figueres. Back in 1923, José Pelletier won the 3rd stage of the race, which in 2025 will also return to Figueres. On 25 March, ‘La Volta’ will arrive from Banyoles in the birthplace of Salvador Dalí.

La Vuelta a España’s 5th stage brings back the team time trial after the Barcelona 2023 fiasco. Barcelona hosted the Big Start that year with a TTT, and the organisers thought it would be a great idea to schedule the event in the evening. Unfortunately, the weather didn’t cooperate, leading to surreal scenes as teams navigated the wet city streets in near darkness. The only team unfazed by the chaos was Team DSM–firmenich, who walked away with the win.

The course around Figueres isn’t particularly exciting. It’s flat until the final stretch, where the road begins to climb gently towards the finish line.
