withdrawals cdd - Vuelta 2024: Withdrawalsfoto: Cor VosOn Saturday 17 August, a peloton of 176 riders embarked on edition 79 of La Vuelta a España - 39 of them did not reach the finish line in Madrid.

Halfway through the 2nd stage, Dylan van Baarle hit the deck. He did regain contact with the peloton, but he was forced to abandon the race with a broken hip.

Rui Costa went down in the finale of the 5th stage. The former World Champion could not continue the race either.

The 6th stage turned out to be Rigoberto Uran’s last race. The retiring Colombian crashed in stage 6 and had to withdraw.

João Almeida was the first GC contender who pulled out. The Portuguese was infected with Covid 19 and he did not start in stage 9. Antonio Tiberi, fourth at that time and leader of the young riders classification, DNF in that stage.

Triple stage winner Wout van Aert crashed out of contention in the 16th stage. He was also leading both the KOM and the points classification at that point.

The 2023 Vuelta also set off with 176 riders, 28 of whom did not reach the finish line in Madrid. Laurens De Plus was among the most unfortunate. The Belgian crashed after a few kilometres in the rain-soaked 1st stage and pulled out with an injury to his right hip.
