Race report
Wout van Aert attacks from the gun. Marc Soler and Pablo Castrillo quickly bridge across before Jonas Gregaard, Stefan Küng, Torstein Træen and Jesús Herrada make it seven at the front. But the battle keeps raging and more riders join the attackers, including Adam Yates, Jay Vine, and David Gaudu. The peloton is already trailing by over 1 minute when Max Poole and Gijs Leemreize are the last riders to make the junction.

The attackers ride to a maximum lead of over 5 minutes.

The gap falls below 5 minutes on the Alto de El Purche. Richard Carapaz attacks from the peloton, while Jay Vine, Adam Yates, Marc Soler, David Gaudu, Stefan Küng, Chris Harper, Torstein Træen, and Pablo Castrillo are the remaining leaders.

Yates heads out alone on the Alto de Hazallanas, while Antonio Tiberi is dropped from the peloton on the early slopes.

Yates crests the Hazallanas 40 seconds ahead of Gaudu and Vine. Carapaz follows a minute later with Castrillo in his wheel. The peloton is over 5 minutes in arrears.

The four chasers come together in the descent, but that doesn’t mean they’re closing in on Yates on the rolling run to the second Hazallanas ascent. Quite the opposite. The Brit pulls further away.

On the second ascent of the Hazallanas, Carapaz drops his companions. Over 6 minutes later Enric Mas rides away from red jersey Ben O’Connor and Primoz Roglic.

Yates reaches the summit over 2 minutes ahead of Carapaz. Mas is 4.38 minutes behind and the group O’Connor/Roglic is an extra minute in arrears.

Yates flies downhill to take one of the finest wins in his career before Carapaz finishes in second. The other chase groups come together in the streets of Granada and then it’s red jersey O’Connor who sprints to third place.

The Australian still leads La Vuelta ahead of Roglic, while Carapaz moves up to third place.
