Race report
Following several short-lived attacks, Vito Braet, Fran Miholjević and Edward Planckaert give it a go after 30 kilometres. Isaac del Toro and Simone Petilli rejoin them before the five open up a 5 minutes lead.
Miholjević is the last attacker to be reeled in on the early slopes of the Alto de Moncalvillo.
With 6 kilometres to go to the summit, team mates Daniel Felipe Martínez, Aleksandr Vlasov, and Primoz Roglic pull away from the rest of the field. The Slovenian continues on his own after 1 kilometre.
Enric Mas opens the chase with 4 kilometres to climb. He closes in to 20 seconds, but then the gap extends again. Meanwhile, red jersey Ben O’Connor loses more ground in a group with among others Richard Carapaz. Eventually, the red jersey is dropped from the group within the last 2 kilometres.
Roglic powers on to take the stage win and the leader’s jersey. In the fight for time bonuses, David Gaudu and Mattias Skjelmose overhaul Mas in the last hundred meters.
