Race report
Asgreen and Juaristi are the riders to open a gap. Sheehan, Gregaard, Thompson, and Soto rejoin them. Vine, Frigo, Champion and Castrillo make it eight at the front, as Juaristi and Thompson are dropped. Soto can’t follow either.

Poole tracks the leaders down after 20 kilometres of action, while Meintjes bridges across on the Alto de la Colladiella. The leaders reach the summit 30 seconds ahead of the GC group. Vine is the first to crest the summit.

This marks the beginning of a phase with attacks coming from all sides. While Vine also takes the most mountain points on the Alto de Santo Emiliano, he climbs the Alto de la Colladiella for the second time in a group of around thirty attackers.

On the ascent, the lead group disintegrates. Again, Vine is the first rider at the summit. His companions at that moment are Pavel Sivakov, Óscar Rodríguez, Bruno Armirail, Aleksandr Vlasov, Quentin Pacher, Ion Izagirre, and Pablo Castrillo. The peloton trails by almost 3 minutes.

Vine empties the tank until the base of the Cuitu Negru, and then he is done. Sivakov starts to pull, and 4 kilometres up the mountain, there are two riders left on his wheel, Vlasov and Castrillo.

The gap falls from 3 to 2 minutes on the finish climb. Then Landa accelerates in the GC group. Only O’Connor, Roglic, Mas, Yates, Lipowitz, Gaudu, and Carapaz follow his move.

Castrillo strikes once the ascent steepens within the last 3 kilometres. Lipowitz speeds up in the GC group with Roglic on his wheel. After being lanched, the Slovenian sets off alone. That is, for a moment, as Mas regains contact.

Vlasov gets back to Castrillo’s wheel in the last 800 metres. But the Spaniard digs deep to distance him and claws his way to his second win of the week.

Going into the final kilometre, Mas drops Roglic, but the Slovenian manages to rejoin later. They cross the line together, 38 seconds ahead of O’Connor. The Australian retains the red jersey, although he sees his main rivals closing in again. However, Roglic has to concede 20 seconds afterwards due to drafting behind the Red Bull-BORA-hansgrohe team car.
