Race report
Kasper Asgreen, Kaden Groves, Victor Campenaerts, Sylvain Moniquet, Mauro Schmid, Simon Guglielmi, Mathis Le Berre, and Enzo Leijnse attack from the gun. Nicolas Vinokourov, Jay Vine, Marc Soler, Ruben Fernández, Kim Heiduk, Julius van den Berg, José Felix Parra, Xabier Isasa, Wout van Aert, and Luca Vergallito bridge across in the first phase, while Brandon McNulty, Sam Oomen, Michael Woods, Gijs Leemreize, Mikel Bizkarra, and Dylan Teuns make the junction after a 20 kilometres chase.

While Isasa loses contact on the slopes, Van Aert reaches the summit of the Alto Campo de Arbre first, thus moving into the first position in the KOM standings. He then extends his lead at the Alto O Portel, as he outsprints Vine and Soler.

The peloton is already 15 minutes in arrears when Van Aert, Campenaerts, Schmid, and Guglielimi jump off the front with just under 50 kilometres to go. The latter is dropped from the group, while the other three are reeled in after a 10 kilometres chase.

Van Aert, Schmid, Woods, Vine, McNulty, Soler, and Oomen are the remaining leaders at the Puerto de Lumeras. The Flemish powerhouse is the first rider at the summit and he takes the lead in the KOM competition.

McNulty and Vine hit the deck in the descent and the remaining five riders hit the finish climb 40 seconds ahead of Leemreize. The other riders are 2 minutes or more behind.

Schmid accelerates as the Puerto de Ancares steepens. Woods follows his move and continues on his own a little later. The Canadian champion is is in a class of his own on the steep slopes, and he solos to victory.

Red jersey Ben O’Connor loses contact in the GC group with 4 kilometres to climb. Primoz Roglic smells blood and powers on until only Enric Mas and Mikel Landa remain on his wheel. Landa is dropped with 2.4 kilometres to go, shortly followed by Mas.

The Slovenian gains nearly 2 minutes on O’Connor, though the Australian still retains the lead.
