Race report
Davide Villella, Thomas De Gendt, Jetse Bol and Luis Angel Maté attack from the gun. The Spaniard can’t follow the pace after 15 kilometres of hard racing before Samuele Battistella, Alessandro De Marchi, Maxim Van Gils and Xandro Meurisse take his place. To no avail. The peloton is bunched again at kilometre 30.
Quentin Pacher is the next attacker. His solo lasts 10 kilometres.
In the run-up to the Alto del Torno Thymen Arensman, Dylan van Baarle, Louis Meintjes, Robbert Stannard, Jimmy Janssens, Samuele Battistella, Edoardo Zambanini, Filippo Conca, José Manuel Diaz and Simon Guglielmi break clear. This is the right move. Strangely, Arensman sits up and waits for the peloton. He was the best placed attacker, 3 minutes down on red jersey Evenepoel.
On the climb Marc Soler, Santiago Buitrago and KOM leader Jay Vine open the chase on the climb. But they are brought back.
The nine leaders open a maximum lead of more than 5 minutes.
The gap has fallen below 4 minutes inside the last 10 kilometres when Battistella attacks. Janssens goes with him, while Van Baarle sets off in pursuit. Meanwhile, Geoghegan Hart hits the deck in the run-up to the finish climb.
Janssens distances his companion on the steep Les Praeres climb. Meintjes overhauls Van Baarle and catches the two leaders 2.5 kilometers under the top. On the lower slopes Evenepoel drops the other GC riders and forges on.
Meintjes climbs to triumph, while Evenepoel puts time into all his GC rivals.
