Race report
A lot of movement until ten riders break free at kilometre 10. Rubén Fernández, Mark Padun, Jan Bakelants, Nelson Oliveira, Fausto Masnada, Kaden Groves, Marco Brenner, Dario Cataldo, Xandro Meurisse and Xabier Mikel Azparren carve out a lead of 6 minutes.
The lead has fallen below 2 minutes on the Collada de Brenes. Which inspires Padun to go solo. He reaches the summit 1 minute ahead of the first chaser, Rubén Fernández. On the lower slopes red jersey Rudy Molard can’t follow the pace in the main group.
Molard rejoins the peloton just before the Pico Jano, while lone leader Padun enters the finish climb with a 56 seconds lead. Davide Villella, Elie Gesbert and Jay Vine are the first to go after him. Simon Yates strikes with 9.5 kilometres to go. Ten riders rejoin him.
Evenepoel takes over with Roglic, Mas, O’Connor, Sivakov, Yates and Hindley in his wheel. One after the other riders are dropped until only Mas remains.
Meanwhile, Vine overhauls Padun. The Evenepoel-Mas combo is next. They are chasing around 20 seconds behind the Australian for the rest of the climb. Vine takes the win, Evenepoel the red jersey.
