Race report
A group of 10 riders jumps off the front after 40 kilometres of intense racing. Clément Champoussin, Bob Jungels, Gino Mäder, Jesús Herrada, Rigoberto Uran, Quentin Pacher, Lawson Craddock, Kenny Elissonde, Marc Soler and Simon Guglielmi are accompanied by Fred Wright, Alessandro De Marchi and Elie Gesbert. The attackers put more than 7 minutes into the peloton.
Craddock strikes with 18 kilometres to go. Soler strikes from the chasing group – Herrada, Elissonde, Champoussin, Pacher, Uran – with 2 kilometres to climb. Yet, it’s Uran who is first to rejoin the American.
The Colombian takes the spoils after an intriguing uphill sprint with Pacher and Herrada close behind. Meanwhile, dominant race leader Evenepoel neutralises all attacks, so he stays in La Roja. Since Roglic dropped out, Mas and Ayuso sit in second and third.
