Race report
Luis Angel Maté and Hugh Carthy are the first attackers. Rohan Dennis, Vincenzo Nibali, Carl Fredrik Hagen and Vojtech Repa also join the breakaway. The pace remains high, which splits the lead group in two. Only Nibali, Carthy and Dennis remaining.
A huge group – with Thymen Arensman, Sam Oomen, Jai Hindley, Richard Carapaz, Jay Vine, David de la Cruz, Fausto Masnada, Brandon McNulty, Louis Vervaeke, Rudy Molard, Lawson Craddock, Rigoberto Uran, Gino Mäder, Xabier Mikel Azparren, Marc Soler, Jasha Sütterlin, Rubén Fernández, Sébastien Reichenbach, Louis Meintjes, Omer Goldstein, Nelson Oliveira, Mads Pedersen, Antonio Tiberi, Élie Gesbert, Xandro Meurisse, Nicolas Prodhomme, and Fred Wright – tracks the trio down, while the peloton takes it easy after 20 kilometres of hard racing. The attackers carve out a lead of more than 6 minutes.
Craddock goes solo with 78 kilometres remaining. He reaches the Alto del Purche with a lead of 1.30 minutes.
KOM leader Vine goes after Craddock in the last 2 kilometres of the Purche climb to catch him just before the summit. The GC group reaches the summit 5 minutes later.
Hindley, Arensman, Meintjes, Carapaz, Soler, Reichenbach, Uran, Mäder, Vervaeke and De la Cruz regain contact with Vine and Craddock inside the last 28 kilometres.
Soler continues solo in the steep first kilometre of the finish climb. Roglic and Evenepoel accelerate in the GC group. Only Mas, O’Connor and López stay in their wheels.
López strikes inside the last 11 kilometres. Mas goes after him.
Arensman rejoins Soler 7 kilometres before the finish. Moments later the Dutchman heads out alone. He powers on to the biggest win in his young career.
Mas finishes bests López in the srint for second plae, while Roglic leaves Evenepoel behind just before the flamme rouge to finish the race 15 seconds earlier. The young Belgian still leads La Vuelta though, 1.34 minutes ahead of the Slovene with Mas 27 seconds further behind.
