Race report
Mikael Cherel, Ander Okamika, Aritz Bagües and Nico Denz join forces early on, while 20 riders bridge across before the first climb.
Dozens of riders want to joint the front, but to no avail. On the contrary. The lead group is down to 18 riders when they reach the second summit of the day: Mikaël Cherel, Damien Touzé, Jay Vine, Mark Padun, Pelayo Sánchez, Julen Amezqueta, Andrea Bagioli, Lawson Craddock, Magnus Cort, Antonio Jesus Soto, Anthony Roux, Andreas Kron, Robert Stannard, Nico Denz, Fabio Aru, Quinn Simmons, Jan Polanc and Rui Oliveira. They open up a maximum gap of 3 minutes.
Approximately 50 kilometres before the finish Simmons, Touzé, Padun, Kron, Roux, Soto, Craddock, Cort, Bagioli and Oliveira push on together.
Their lead has fallen to 30 seconds when Simmons goes solo with 34 kilometres remaining. Oliveira rejoins him before Craddock, Kron, Cort, Roux and Bagioli also bridge across.
The peloton is chasing at 30 seconds in for tens of of kilometres without coming closer.
The break survives and Cort powers to his third stage victory at this Vuelta. Oliveira and Simmons finish in second and third.
Roglic crosses the line 18 seconds later in the peloton to extend his GC lead.
