Race report
James Piccoli is the first attacker. Bert-Jan Lindeman, Harm Vanhoucke and Pelayo Sánchez bridge across.
A huge group rejoins the attackers. On board are Majka, Storer, Arensman, Bouwman, Aru, Taaramäe, Vansevenant, Keukeleire, Puccio, Izagirre (Gorka), Cras, De Tier, Herrada (José), Le Gac, Erviti, Gamper, Nibali, Canal, Planckaert, Cherel, Dewulf, Okamika, Bagües, Martin (Gotzon), Maté, Howson and Schultz.
Storer is the first rider at the summit of the Puerto de San Lorenzo before he goes solo in the last kilometres of the Cobertoria. He reaches the top 1 minute ahead of the chasers and moves into the lead of the mountains classfication. The peloton is 5 minutes in arrears.
The peloton gobbles up the chasers on the Alto La Segá del Cordal.
David de la Cruz goes after the lone attacker on the Gamoniteiro. He catches him with 7 kilometres to go.
The Spaniard heads out alone, while Bernal strikes from the GC group inside the last 4.5 kilometres. Roglic, Kuss, López and Mas go with him.
Some 500 metres later López attacks. Haig, Yates, Mäder and Meintjes rejoin the chasers.
In a 1 kilometre chase ‘Superman’ catches De la Cruz and leaves him behind. Roglic accelerates on the lower slopes with Bernal and Mas on his wheel. The gap is 30 seconds at that moment, which is enough for López to seal the deal.
Roglic speeds up again in the last few hundred metres to drop his rivals en finishes in second place. He puts 8 seconds into Mas, who finishes in third, to cement his GC lead.
