Race report
After a short and hard battle for the break a group of 18 riders manage to distance the peloton. Bardet takes most KOM points at the Puerto Berzocana and Collado de Ballesteros to take the lead in the KOM competition.
With 50 kilometres remaining Navarro, Holmes and Prodhomme jump clear from the lead group. Holmes punctures, but returns to the leaders with Vanmarcke.
Bardet, Keukeleire, Champoussin, Herrada, Geniets, Tratnik and Zeits bridge across with 26 kilometres remaining. Moments later Prodhomme, Navarro and Vanmarcke go again. The latter two hit the deck in a descent.
Prodhomme enters the finish climb 1 minutes ahead of Navarro, Zeits and Gibbons.
Zeits and Bardet rejoin the Frenchman 6 kilometres before the top. Bardet doesn’t dilly-dally and goes solo.
The Frenchman takes the win and KOM jersey. Meanwhile, López strikes in the GC group. The Colombian opens up a gap before Roglic almost tracks him down in the last kilometre. Just 4 seconds remain.
Eiking loses 20 seconds in the fast finale, but retains La Roja.
