Race report
It takes 80 kilometres for the breakway to take shape. Then 30 riders jump clear to carve out a lead of more than 12 minutes.
Which is good news for Odd Christian Eiking, as he is the best placed attacker, 9.10 minutes down on the red jersey.
Matteo Trentin strikes with 36 kilometres remaining and Alex Aranburu, Floris De Tier and Jesús Herrada go with him.
Michael Storer, Andrea Bagioli, Lawson Craddock, Lilian Calmejane, Kenny Elissonde, Mauri Vansevenant and Rui Oliveira rejoin them in the first part of the Puerto de Almáchar.
Oliveira is the first rider to enter the much steeper second half of the climb. Elissonde, Storer, Calemejane and Vansevenant rejoin him before Storer heads out alone.
The Australian reaches the summit in first position, while Roglic attacks from the peloton. He reaches the summit with López, Mas and Haig chasing behind. Yates and Bernal are chasing the chasers.
Storer wins the stage 22 seconds ahead of Mauri Vansevenant. Eiking comes home fifth and he has to wait 9 minutes to be sure of the red jersey.
Roglic hits the deck in the descent. Mas, López and Haig rejoin him before Vlasov, Großschartner and Kuss also come across just before reaching Rincón de la Victoria. The seven finish 11.27 minutes after Eiking, so the Dane moves into the red jersey.
Bernal and Yates cross the line 37 seconds after the group Roglic.
