The combination Pau and La Vuelta is not as usual as the combination Pau and La Grande Boucle. Almost yearly the French grand tour visits the town in the Pyrenees’ foothills. In fact, it is the most visited place in the race’s history.
In 2019, La Vuelta and the Tour de France are doing exactly the same thing in Pau, namely organising an individual time trial. While the individual time trial on the Tour featured some punchy slopes, the route of the Vuelta’s ITT will be longer and the uphills less steep. The first climb appears straight after the start – 2.6 kilometres at 6.1% -, while the other one goes to the village Saint-Faust. This one is 2.3 kilometres long and slopes at 5% before continuing onto a false flat of approximately 1 kilometre. Another false flat section leads onto the final kilometre.
There are two intermediate time checks, at kilometre 11.9 and at kilometre 24 (in Saint-Faust).
