Race report
At kilometre 10, KOM leader Ángel Madrazo opens up a gap with his Burgos-BH teammate Jetse Bol, while José Herrada tracks them down in a 6 kilometres effort. The gap balloons on the first climb of the day, the Puerto de Alcublas, before Madrazo cements his KOM lead at the summit.

The three extend their lead to 11 minutes before the peloton reacts. But without much grinta. The gap falls down to 9 minutes before it bounces back to 11 minutes.

The trio tackles the Alto de Javalambre with a lead of 9 minutes, but it goes down fast on the climb. After playing yo-yo several times Madrazo drops back inside the last 4 kilometres.

Valverde, Roglic and Pogacar are the best GC riders when López strikes in the last 3 kilometres. The Colombian opens up a considerable gap, but Roglic and Valverde come clawing back.

Madrazo regains contact inside the last kilometre. He waits a moment before he goes all out. Obviously, Bol does not react and Herrada is out of energy. The mountain king wins the first mountain top finish of La Vuelta.

López finishes in fourth to move back into the race lead, while Valverde and Roglic cross the line 12 seconds behind the Colombian. The Slovenian moves up to second place and Quintana drops back to third, one place and 5 seconds ahead of Valverde.
