Race report
Six riders manage to get clear in a fast-paced opening. Silvan Dillier, Luka Pibernik, Harm Vanhoucke, Salvatore Puccio, Diego Rubio and Stéphane Rossetto open up a 2 minutes gap before the peloton takes them on a leash.
Rossetto stops his efforts with 60 kilometres remaining and he waits for the peloton.
The leaders crest the Alto de Madera 1 minute ahead of the peloton before they are brought back inside the last 5 kilometres. A huge crash takes down most of the peloton just before the last kilometre. Van der Sande jumps clear and Richeze closes down the gap. Bennett is in complete control though. He tracks down Deceuninck’s lead-out man to leave him behind on the finishing straight.
Roglic finishes with the main field to retain the red jersey.
