Th 16th stage is tailor-made for diesel-powered climbers. Men with stamina. Straight from the start the route hits a sheer endless false flat, which stops after 50 kilometres. Not to descend, but the inclination kicks it up a notch on the Puerto San Lorenzo. This is a climb of 10 kilometres at 8.5%.
Back in the valley, the route enters a second false flat. This time it’s a 10 kilometres prelude to the Alto de la Cobertoria, which is an ascent of 8.3 kilometres at 8.2%.
The same scenario again after the steep descent of the Cobertoria. Another false flat leads onto the 17.8 kilometres climb at 6.2% to the top of the Alto de La Cubilla. If you include the false flat before the actual ascent, the Cubilla amounts to more than 34 kilometres of steady uphills.
It seems that Roglic is untouchable. The Slovenian’s supremacy takes away his rivals appetite to put him to the test. Why bother? He is the best climber on La Vuelta and he is supported by the best team. Possibly, his teammate Robert Gesink is going to continue Jumbo-Visma’s winning streak in Sepp Kuss style. Just go with the breakaway and and grab the opportunity to shine if your assistance is not needed by the leader.
