Race report
The peloton takes it easy in the first part of the race. The riders are still together when they enter Madrid at km 32.
Tiago Machado is the first attacker on the final circuit. Jetse Bol, Alessandro De Marchi, Loïc Chetout, Stéphane Rossetto and Mikel Iturria join him, but with 44 kms to go the six are reeled in.
Diego Rubio, Joey Rosskopf and Nikita Stalnov are next to jump, while Garikoitz Bravo bridges across. Stalnov punctures before he is dropped and 7 kms before the finish the other attackers are reeled in.
Elia Viviani opens his sprint from way back, but still claims an impressive victory. Peter Sagan comes in second, Giacomo in third.
Simon Yates, who wore the red jersey for eleven days, seals the overall victory. On the podium he is accompanied by Enric Mas and Miguel Ángel López. With an average of 24 years and 8 months, this is the youngest podium at La Vuelta since 1936.
