Once the flag is dropped, Stéphane Rossetto, Diego Rubio, Nicholas Schulz and Juan Felipe Osorio give it a go. Johan Le Bon chases them down and with five they race to a maximum lead of more than 7 minutes.
On the Alto de Belltall Rossetto and Rubio leave their companions behind. They crest the summit almost 5 minutes ahead of the main group, but with 8 kms remaining they are the last two escapees to be reeled in.
In the ensuing sprint Trentin pips home-rider Lobato to become the 100th riders who won stages in alle three Grand Tours.
