Race report
No hurry in the first part of the race. And then the peloton enters Madrid with Contador slightly ahead of the others. El campeón is saluted by cheers and applause from the home crowds and he drinks in this goodbye.
Then the race is on. After Trentin wins the intermediate sprint, Alessandro De Marchi, Rui Costa and Nicholas Schultz head out together.
De Marchi and Costa push on with two in the penultimate lap, only to be brought back on the last passage on the line. In the ensuing sprint Matteo Trentin powers to his 4th win the 2017 Vuelta. Froome finishes 11th, which is enough for him to take home the points jersey along with the red jersey and the combination jersey.
