Race report
Despite several riders trying to break away at the beginning of the race the peloton remains bunched for a long time. Several teams (of GC contenders) control the race. Being wary of echelons, they try to maintain their leaders in the front positions.
With 30 kms to go the peloton splits, but shortly the gaps are closed. Trentin wins the intermediate sprint in Saint-Marcel-sur-Aude ahead of Haller and Oss.
In the last 8 kms a new split appears and with 2 kms to go, Quick-Step puts in a move with three riders, tearing the field apart. A couple of riders cross over before Lampaert takes off in the last km to solo to victory.
Nibali is one of the riders who managed to get in the first group and he is the best finisher of the GC favourites.
