Race report
At km 2 Michel Kreder opens the road and Rohan Dennis briefly joins him, but they are brought back in no time. The battle to get into the break away keeps raging, but it’s only at kilometre 95 that a break takes shape. Niki Terpstra, Marc Soler, Julien Bernard, Matteo Trentin, Alessandro De Marchi, Jaime Rosón, Jose Joaquin Rojas, Nico Denz, Alexandre Geniez, Michael Mørkøv, Bert-Jan Lindeman, Juan José Lobato, Luis Leon Sanchez, Valerio Agnoli, Domen Novak, Arnaud Courteille, Jacques Janse Van Rensburg and Rafael Reis race to a maximum lead of 5 minutes.
On the lower slopes of the double-barreled ascent Janse Van Rensburg goes alone. On the second part, the Bermejo, Rojas, Rosón and Terpstra chase him down. Terpstra is dropped and his team mate Trentin takes over. They are first to crest, 23 seconds ahead of Soler and Geniez. The peloton is 4 minutes in arrears.
On descent Nibali attacks to take a small lead, but halfway down he is brought back. Roche goes on the counter attack and does a better job than the Shark.
After the drop the front group is down to Trentin and Rojas. In the ensuing sprint the Italian outguns the home-rider from Murcia.
Roche puts 29 seconds into the other GC contenders and now sits in second overall, 36 seconds down on leader Froome and in the same time as Chaves.
The finish is expected around 17:40 local time (scheduled times).
