Vuelta 2015 Route stage 9: Torrevieja - Cumbre del Sol

Vuelta 2015 stage 9Sunday, August 30, 2015 – Yet another typical Vuelta-stage. Stage 9 leaves from Torrevieja and leads in 168.3 kilometres of mostly rolling roads to an uhill 18%-arrival on the Costa Blanca. Puncheurs… on your marks… ready, set, go!

Departure-place Torrevieja is located on the Costa Blanca and has a population of about 100,000 inhabitants. In the summer months this doubles as tourists flood the town. Most of them are Spaniards, Torrevieja is also called La Playa de Madrid.

Riders head to Alicante and after racing for a while in the hinterland they get back to the coast. They cross through Benidorm and then continue to Calpe, the winter-base of a lot of pro teams.

The climbing is really nothing special today and with 126.4 kilometres done the Cumbre del Sol is crested for the first time after a climb to an elevation of 350 metres with a steepest section at 19% The same hill is on the menu again in the finale, but this time the ascent stops higher up the hill at 415 metres. Totalling 4.1 kilometres at 8.8%, the 19% section is now halfway, while the last kilometres rises at 10%.
