Race report
Once the flag is dropped different riders attack, but it takes awhile before the break of the day is off. Eventually Bert-Jan Lindeman, Przemyslaw Niemiec, Davide Villella, Walter Pedraza, José Gonçalves and Matteo Montaguti race to a 4 minutes advantage before the pack takes control to stabilize the gap at around 3 minutes.
With 50 km’s left the gain drops to around 2 minutes and 20 km’s later a big crash marks the race. Nibali is one of the victims and the Italian is forced to chase, while David Tanner and Przemyslaw Niemiec abandon. Matteo Pelucchi is already out of the race after a crash.
José Gonçalves jumps off the front when the advantage is down to 1 minute, while the other riders are reeled in. With around 13 km’s left Valverde takes 2 seconds at an intermediate sprint, Purito grabs 1 second.
The lone leader is brought back the moment Nibali is back in the peloton – with 10 km’s to go.
At 4 km’s Gautier attacks and Tom Dumoulin takes over. Quintana, Meintjes and Roche take the Dutchman’s wheel, but Meintjes is dropped. In the pack Nibali pays for his efforts.
Daniel Martin tries to bridge the gap, but he doesn’t make it, while Quintana is dropped also. In the last km Dumoulin and Chaves are left upfront and the Colombian is strongest in the uphill sprint.
After the race Nibali is disqualified when it turns out he held on to a Astana team car when chasing.
