Vuelta 2014: Favourites stage 18 - Break away day!
The finale of a hilly 157 kilometres ride is crowned with a double ascent of Alto Monte Castrove, a 2nd category climb. The terrain is tailor made for escapees. Who is going to take an early break to victory? (Slideshow route/profile)
Anyone aiming for success today should be alert from the start. Odds are on the opening kilometres will be at breakneck speed with attacks galore until the break is a fact. Men to watch: Simon Clarke, Alessandro De Marchi, Cadel Evans, Warren Barguil, José Serpa, Luis León Sánchez, Yuri Trofimov, Vasil Kiryienka (image) and Wilco Kelderman.
Orica could be hedging their bets by trying to send Clarke in the early break and when it doesn’t work out give it a try to position ‘climbing sprinter’ so he can outsprint the bunch. Yesterday the 23-year old was bested only by John Degenkolb.
