Race report
The peloton remains bunched until the intermediate sprint in Manresa, where Primoz Roglic pockets 3 seconds ahead of Axel Laurance and Juan Ayuso. Then the breakaway takes shape. Lennard Kämna, Koen Bouwman, Georg Steinhauser, Frank van den Broek, Jesús Herrada, Geoffrey Bouchard, Embret Svestad-Bårdseng, and Diego Uriarte open up a 30-second gap, before Johannes Taune-Mittet, Brieuc Rolland, Lorenzo Germani, and Eric Antonio Fagúndez set off in pursuit. The four track down the leaders in a 10-kilometres chase, and the twelve ride to a maximum lead of 3.30 minutes.
On the Turó del Puig, Steinhauser and Staune-Mittet head out together, and the duo enters the finish climb 1 minute ahead of the peloton.
Steinhauser drops Staune-Mittet on the early slopes, but UAE Emirates sets a ferocious pace behind him. The German is caught 2.4 kilometres from the finish, and almost simultaneously, Juan Ayuso accelerates. He continues to push until he is alone. But Primoz Roglic stealthily returns.
The chasers are not dillydallying either, but each time they think they’re closing the gap, either Roglic or Ayuso accelerates. As they can’t shake each other off, it leads to a sprint finish, with Roglic taking the win. He also swaps places with his rival in the GC, although they both sit at the same time.
