Volta a Catalunya 2016 Route stage 6: Sant Joan Despí - Vilanova i la Geltrú
Saturday, March 26, 2016 – At 197.2 kilometres, stage 6 in the Volta a Catalunya leads from Sant Joan Despí to coastal town Vilanova i la Geltrú. Not very much chances for spriners in Catalunya, but this might be one of those rare occasions...
As the crow flies, departure place and arrival town are only 40 kilometres apart. Yet the organization managed to squeeze a 200 kilometres stage out of it. Mostly on rolling roads the riders are gradually getting higher until they are above 500 metres with 120 kilometres done. They stay on that altitude for about 15 kilometres and from then on the rolling roads ultimately take them down.
The deep finale offers a small climb that might hurt some of the sprinters. But to be honest, that’s merely theory. In reality the fast men should be wide awake and prepare for a post-stage party. That is, if their teams are willing to contril the race…
The last time the Volta a Catalunya arrived in Vilanova i la Geltrú was in 2014 with Stef Clement taking the flowers. In the last kilometres the Dutchman soloed to victory after leaving his breakaway companions behind. Rudy Mollard finished second and Pieter Serry third, both 3 seconds down.
