Volta a Catalunya 2015 Route stage 6: Cervera - Port Aventura
Saturday, March 28, 2015 - Stage 6 in the Volta a Catalunya is a 194.1 kilometres ride leading from Cervera to PortAventura with a bunch sprint the most likely outcome. Two colls are to be crested, yet the last one is with over 30 kilometres left to race.
Cervera, at an elevation of 548 metres, is a place oozing history. It dates back to 1026, but anno 2015 there is not much left of it. Some 10,000 people live in the town.
Four climbs today, evenly distributed over the race, with only the middle and last spicy enough to deserve a categorization, respectively in the 1st category and the 3rd category. The finish is at the end of a long but not particularly steep descent.
With 87.8 kilometres done the Alt de Prades looms, a 11 kilometres climb at 4% with a steepest section at 6%. Following a long drop and a few short climbs the Alt del Coll Roig appears with 30 kilometres left. In 3.7 kilometres the riders go up the hill at an average grade of 5%.
Coll Roig peaks at 500 metres and the rest of the journey is mostly going down to the arrival at Port Aventura. The amusement park nearby tourist-resort Salou is among the top 10 in Europe when talking number of visitors. The doors open each year in March, the visit of the Tour of Catalonia is a convenient way to draw attention to that fact.
