Race report
Silvan Dillier and Mark Stewarts head out together to open up a lead of over 2 minutes in no-time. But then the peloton reacts and takes them on a leash – 2 minutes, that’s all they get.
Crosswinds split the peloton as the race enters its final 80 kilometres. Bjerg is the only top 10 rider in the second group, so it’s not a big deal, but still, the attackers are caught.
Stewart gives it another go when the peloton regroups, this time with Jonas Rickaert as his sidekick. The second attack is neutralised inside the last 30 kilometres.
Adam Yates – who hit the tarmac – drops out ofthe race with 11 kilometres left to climb on Jebel Jais.
Attacks by Rubio and Hirt have been neutralised in the climb before Paret-Peintre and O’Conmor strike with 1.2 kilometres to go. The young Frenchman launches his leader, who finishes it off with a 5 seconds lead over the Vine led peloton. Since McNulty crosses the line 14 seconds further down, Vine is the new leader in GC.
