Tour of Valencia 2024 Route stage 3: San Vicente del Raspeig - Orihuela
Friday 2 February - Stage 3 of the Tour of Valencia looks promising for the fast men. The 161.3 kilometres long race features a huge climb halfway, but the rest of the route is played out on flat to undulating terrain.
Year in year out the Tour of Valencia visits Orihuela. Usually it’s a starting venue, but this time the inhabitants have the opportunity to witness a celebrating rider crossing the finish line. One of the most notable people from Orihuela is Bernardo Ruiz. The oldest living Grand Tour winner (Vuelta, 1948) was born there in 1925. The 99-year old also won stages in the Tour de France and the Giro d’Italia.
The riders roll out from San Vicente del Raspeig and travel on gently rolling terrain to the only climb of the day. The Puerto de Albatera – also known as the Alto de Hondón de los Frailes – is 11 kilometres long and averages 4.3%. But it really comes down to the last 4.5 kilometres, as this section rises at 7.2%.
The fast finishers in the peloton should not worry though. They have all the time in the world to regain contact with the peloton, as the summit lies almost 70 kilometres from the finish line. There are hardly any obstacles between the Puerto de Albatera and Orihuela.
The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while the intermediate sprint comes with 3, 2 and 1 seconds.
