Tour of Valencia 2023: The Route
foto: Cor VosThe Volta a la Comunitat Valenciana was 2023's first stage race on European soil. Following a hilly race on the first day of action the climbers were treated in the stages 2 and 4. Aleksandr Vlasov was title holder.
Stage 1 travels from Orihuela to Altea. The last 70 kilometres features two climbs, but the finale is flat. Which was not the case in 2020, when the race finishes in the mountains above Altea. That day, Tadej Pogacar took the spoils.
Pure bred climbers are expected to shine on the second day in this year’s Tour of Valencia. Stage 2 sets off from the Luis Navarro Amorós Velodrome in Novelda and the riders enter a route with an elevation gain of 3,400 metres. The finish is located at the Alto de Pinos, and the last kilometres are very steep.
Stage 3 takes place on a lumpy route between Betera and Sagunto. The last hurdle is the Puerto del Garbi, a 9.3 kilometres long climb at 5.2%, is crested with 35 kilometres remaining. In the 2017 Vuelta it was Tomasz Marczynski who won the race to Sagunto from the breakaway.
The Queen Stage is scheduled on the fourth day of action. The race kicks into gear in Burriana and takes in four intermediate climbs before the finale is played out on the Alto de la Cueva Santa above Altura. The last 13 kilometres go up at 4%, but the finish climb also ramps up to double digits at times.
The 5th stage is a staple on the last day of the Tour of Valencia. Leading from Paterna to the Plaza del Ayuntamiento in Valencia, a bunch sprint is the most likely outcome.
