Race report
It takes more than 50 kilometres for the breakaway to take shape. Attila Valter, Lars van den Berg, Jan Tratnik, Nicolas Prodhomme and Sven Erik Bystrøm open up a gap on the first serious uphill test of the day, the Coll de Rates. Fernando Barceló, Dimitri Claeys, Kenny Molly, Valentin Paret-Peintre, Daniel Navarro and Jan Polanc join them. The eleven extend their lead to almost 3 minutes.
Tratnik enters the finish climb in first position, 1.30 minutes of the main group.
Valverde attacks from the peloton inside the last 5 kilometres. The other favourites rejoin the Spaniard and catch Tratnik when the tarmac transforms to gravel.
Fuglsang, Mas, Valverde, Vlasov, Evenepoel, Ciccone, Teuns and Rodriguez open up a gap before Vlasov heads out alone in the last 1.5 kilometres.
The Russian re-enters the tarmac to extend his lead in the final kilometre. Rodriguez and Mas finish in second and third, while overnight leader Evenepoel finishes 41 second later. With two flat stages to go, Vlasov moves into the overall race lead.
