Tour of Valencia 2021 Route stage 2: Alicante - Alicante
Thursday 15 April - The 2nd stage of the Tour of Valencia is an out-and-back race in Alicante. The 178.1 kilometres route suits a fast finishers showdown.
Two years ago the Tour of Valencia also featured a race from Alicante to Alicante. The route was far from flat, yet the race came down to a bunch sprint anyway with Matteo Trentin outperforming Nacer Bouhanni and Ben Swift. In August of that same year La Vuelta finished in Alicante and, again, the sprinters had it their way. Sam Bennett outgunned Edward Theuns and Luka Mezgec on the line.
A similar scenario is on the cards in this year’s 2nd stage. The route takes in one intermediate climb, which is situated far from the finish.
The Hondón de Los Frailes is 6.2 kilometres long and the average gradient sits at 5.8%. The climb peaks out with more than 100 kilometres remaining.
The rest of the race is predominantly played out on undulating terrain. The last 25 kilometres go false flat downhill until an uphill kick could stir things up in the finale.
