Race report
The second climb, the Azurki, sees the formation of a sizeable breakaway, with standout names including Ben Healy, Bauke Mollema, Ion Izagirre, Daniel Felipe Martínez, Sepp Kuss, Warren Barguil, Marc Hirschi, Pablo Castrillo and Romain Grégoire.
The breakaway fractures on the Krabelin, though the gaps between the riders stay narrow. King of the Mountains Bruno Armirail is the first to reach the summit, closely followed by Callum Scotson, Ion Izagirre, Daniel Felipe Martínez, Ben Healy, Jordan Jegat, Txomin Juaristi, and Sepp Kuss. Bauke Mollema, Finlay Pickering, Warren Barguil, Romain Grégoire, and Marc Hirschi are just behind as well.
As these riders come together, Armirail presses on solo, reaching the Trabakua summit over a minute ahead of the first chasers, while Kuss, Juaristi, and Pickering lose contact. Armiral waits for the chasers on the descent.
There is a status quo for several dozen kilometres, before Martínez and Healy make their move on the Izua. The peloton follows, 1 minute behind. The Irishman reaches the top alone, as the yellow jersey group swallows up the remaining attackers. João Almeida is accompanied by Isaac del Toro, Marc Soler, Thibau Nys, Mattias Skjelmose, Jordan Jegat, and Enric Mas.
On the Trabakua, with 21 kilometres to go, Almeida and company catch Healy. Nys can’t match the pace on the climb, while Skjelmose hits the deck in the descent.
On a small climb in the final 14 kilometres, only Healy, Mas, and Almeida remain at the front. Del Toro regains contact with 8 kilometres remaining. Del Toro makes it back with 8 kilometres remaining, but is soon distanced again when Mas ups the pace. Healy is also unable to hang on.
Almeida outsprints Mas with ease in the streets of Eibar, claiming his second stage win of the week and sealing the overall title in the process.
