Race report
Despite a flurry of attacks, the bunch remains intact as they hit the base of the second climb, the Andazaratte. Then Gerben Kuypers, Bruno Armirail, Txomin Juaristi, Mattéo Vercher, and Txomin Juaristi give it a go. Only Armirail and Vercher survive as a large chase group forms behind.
Armirail drops Vercher on the third climb, the Alkiza, and he reaches the summit solo. Meanwhile, the peloton reels in the chase group, with Marc Soler, Sepp Kuss, Roger Adrià, Bauke Mollema, Mauri Vansevenant, and Jack Haig as the biggest names.
Relentless attacks behind the Frenchman cause Pello Bilbao to drop back, while the peloton reels in the lone leader on the Mandubia. Brandon McNulty and Harold Tejada then press on together, reaching the summit with a narrow advantage.
In the valley, they’re joined by João Almeida, Mattias Skjelmose, Enric Mas and Nelson Oliveira, but the peloton comes back to them, as the road rises again.
Marc Soler is the next rider to attack. Clément Berthet and Rudy Molard rejoin him, and the three put more than a minute into the peloton.
On the climb to Gainza, Molard loses contact in the leading group. Berthet then drops Soler, while overall leader Maximilian Schachmann struggles to keep up with the pace in the peloton. He is dropped, but manages to make it back on the descent
In the valley, the GC leader attacks, with Isaac del Toro, Florian Lipowitz, Aleksandr Vlasov, and nine other riders joining him. At the intermediate sprint, Lipowitz grabs 1 bonus second
On the final climb, Lipowitz catches Berthet, with Schachmann following him like a shadow. In the background, the first and second groups merge.
Almeida enters the descent with a small lead. Alex Aranburu jumps across to him, and when the Portuguese rider takes a roundabout poorly, the Basque opens up a gap. He extends it at the next roundabout and crosses the line first.
Schachmann finishes third, extending his lead over his rivals with the 4 bonus seconds.
