Tour of the Basque Country 2024 Route stage 2: Irun - Kanbo
Tuesday 2 April - The 2nd stage of the Itzulia Basque Country is entirely played out in the French part of the cycling loving region west of the Pyrenees. The 160 kilometres long route takes in an elevation gain of 2,300 metres.
The climbs in itself are hardly worth mentioning, but it’s the sheer repetition that will wear the riders out. Let’s say this is the Basque take on the Amstel Gold Race, if that makes sense.
A range of outcomes is possible on a route like this. If a strongman sprinter is willing to let his team control the race, a sprint finish is a viable option, but a day for the breakaway is an even more likely scenario. After all, sprinters are usually not very keen to race the Itzulia Basque Country.
The first three riders on the line gain times bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while both intermediate sprints come with 3, 2 and 1 seconds.
