Most climbing metres are part of a 1.7 kilometres climb at 5.2% at the heart of the route, but there are also two steep ramps, one at the beginning and one at the end. These are very short, but intense – ramping up to 10%.
The ITT opens with some twisting and turning – and that short ramp – in the narrow streets of Irun. The route then continues out of town on an undulating road.
Shortly after passing underneath the AP-8 motorway the 1.7 kilometres climb at 5.2% begins. It reaches an elevation of 119 metres and the riders proceed on a nearly flat section until the route starts to drop with 3.5 kilometres to go. This section goes predominantly downhill at shallow gradients.
The last 500 metres go uphill again to the finish line at San Juan Arria Plaza, close to where the first short ramp is situated.
The intermediate time check is situated at the bottom of the only proper climb – after 2.7 kilometres in the saddle.
