Race report
The breakaway takes shape on the flanks of the Azurki. Steven Kruijswijk, Attila Valter, Daniel Felipe Martínez, Valentin Paret-Peintre, Emanuel Buchmann, Harm Vanhoucke, Esteban Chaves, Bruno Armirail, Rein Taaramäe, Eddie Dunbar, Ruben Guerreiro and Marc Hirschi race to a maximum lead of 2 minutes.
Chaves attacks from the lead group in the Krabelin climb. Guerreiro and Kruijswijk go with him. The trio reaches the summit 1 minute ahead of the peloton, while Valter regains contact in the descent.
Schmid attacks from the peloton and he rejoins the leaders on the Itzua. The Swiss rider goes alone inside the last 35 kilometres. He takes a time bonus of 3 seconds in the intermediate sprint in Eibar.
Chaves rejoins Schmid in the last climb, while Vingegaard and Mas attack from the peloton. The GC leader pushes on alone to overhaul the two at the front. The Dane opens up a gap of more than 1 minute.
Vingegaard takes his third stage triumph and wins the Tour of the Basque Country in commanding style.
