The Tour of the Basque Country is never even, but stage 5 is as good as it gets for the fast men. Pure sprinters don’t have to try, this could be a chance for the likes of Magnus Cort, Daryl Impey and Alex Aranburu.
The first part of the route travels along the Bay of Biscay and after 80 kilometres the riders move through finish place Ondarroa for the first time. Some 15 kilometres later the course turns inland for a more lumpy lap through the interior. Three climbs stand out – Mendexa, Gontzagarraigana, and Urkaregi – before the last 29 kilometres are virtually flat.
The first three riders on the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6 and 4 seconds, while two intermediate sprints – at kilometre 80.4 and 124.0 – come with 3, 2 and 1 seconds.
