Race report
It is raining and cold in the Basque Country and it takes 25 kilometres for the breakaway to take shape. Monfort, De Marchi, Verona, Williams, Grmay, Storer and Iturria race to a maximum lead of 4 minutes.
De Marchi and Verona are the last men standing on the the penultimate climb, Bikotz Kane, before they are reeled in with 13 kilometres remaining.
In the last kilometre of the final climb Adam Yates accelerates and leader Schachmann, Pogacar and Fuglsang join him. They stay on their bike in the wet descent before the leader storms to victory ahead of the 20-year old Slovenian, Tadej Pogacar.
Schachmann now leads the Itzulia Basque Country 51 seconds ahead of his team-mate Patrick Konrad (who pocketed 1 intermediate bonus second) with Ion Izagirre 1 second further back.
