Race report
The breakaway – Sergio Samitier, Valentin Paret-Peintre, Martín Gutiérrez, Moran Vermeulen, Mulu Kinfe Hailemichael, Andrea Garosio – races to a maximum lead of over 3 minutes. The attackers are reeled at the foot of the steep Kerschbaumer Sattel.
Jack Haig attacks 1.2 kilometres before the summit of the Kerschbaumer Sattel. Cepeda tracks him down and the Ecuadorian pushes on alone.
The roles are reversed on descent. Haig overhauls Cepeda to enter the finish climb 24 seconds ahead of the peloton.
Haig is caught inside the last 800 metres. Carthy counter-attacks and claws his way up in the steepest part of the climb.
Meanwhile, Geoghegan Hart is calculating his decisive move in the background. He kicks in the last few hundred metres to overhaul Carthy and sprint to the leader’s jersey. Home rider Gall finishes 1 second down in third and Carthy 2 seconds further behind in third.
