Race report
The breakaway takes shape after 35 kilometres of action. Victor Vercouillie, Elmar Reinders, Marco Haller, Alessandro Romele, Rory Townsend, Timo Roosen, Sean Flynn, and Connor Swift open up a 4-minute gap.
Midway through the race, top favourite Mathieu van der Poel hits the deck, and he is forced to chase. On the Eikenberg, the Dutchman regains contact with the rear of the bunch.
Davide Ballerini, Tiesj Benoot, Vito Braet and Stefan Küng attack from the peloton just after the Molenberg. Quinten Hermans sets off in pursuit, with the support of Matteo Trentin, Daan Hoole, and Filippo Ganna. The two chase groups come together with 92 kilometres left to race, before they make the catch in the run-up to the Valkenberg.
When they hit the Oude Kwaremont for the second time, the breakaway’s gap to the peloton stands at 45 seconds. On the climb, Tadej Pogacar accelerates from the peloton, with Matteo Jorgenson and Wout van Aert glued to his wheel. Mathieu van der Poel and Mads Pedersen follow a little later.
Van der Poel and Pogacar crest the Paterberg with a small lead over the other three, while Pedersen is the first to make it back. Van Aert and Jorgenson regain contact later, with Stuyven in their wake. Arjen Livyns, Neilson Powless, and Yevgeniy Fedorov make it a chase group of nine.
As they tackle the final stretch of the Koppenberg, Van der Poel and Pogačar bridge across to Ganna and Trentin. They catch the three remaing leaders, Benoot, Ballerini, and Küng. Then another regroupment takes place.
Pogacar is the first to crest the Taaienberg, with Van der Poel and Pedersen on his wheel. On the next climb, the Oude Kruisberg, Pedersen loses contact, after which Van Aert and Stuyven join him. The three of them ride back to the front of the race.
Van Aert attacks in the run-up to the Oude Kwaremont. He is caught when Pogacar attacks on the climb. The world champion reaches the summit with a 12-second lead over the chasers, which is doubled at the last climb of the day, the Paterberg.
Pogacar powers on and steadily extends his lead. He wins the Tour of Flanders with a margin of over 1 minute ahead of Pedersen, who beats Van der Poel in the sprint for second place.
