Race report
A group of five jumps off the front after 8 kilometres – Stefan Bissegger, Jelle Wallays, Mathijs Paasschens, Fabio Van den Bossche and Matteo Jorgensen -, while Hugo Houle and Nico Denz bridge across after 25 kilometres. The seven carve out a lead of 13 minutes.
The gap has fallen below 2 minutes when Bissegger heads alone on the second ascent of the Oude Kwaremont.
Asgreen and Van der Poel open up a small gap on the Paterberg. Regrouping takes place a little later before Pidcock attacks with Sénéchal, Wellens and Haller on his wheel. Laporte and Alaphilippe bridge across. They rejoin the remnants of the breakaway.
Alaphilippe jumps across to Bissegger on the Koppenberg. After the summit Van der Poel guides Van Aert, Turgis, Wellens, Laporte, Pidcock and Haller back to the wheel of the World Champion and the young Swiss.
Haller heads out alone with 40 kilometres remaining, while chasers rejoin the Van der Poel group.
On the Taaienberg Van der Poel, Van Aert, Alaphilippe, Teuns and Asgreen accelerate to catch Haller, while Turgis jumps across just after the Kruisberg/Hotond. Moments later Asgreen strikes with Van der Poel and Van Aert in his wheel.
Just before the Oude Kwaremont the second chase group – with Van Avermaet, van Baarle, Stuyven, and others – joins the first chasers. They tackle the climb 30 seconds behind the three leaders.
Van der Poel speeds up on the steepest sector of the Oude Kwaremont. Asgreen rejoins the Dutchman after the summit, while they crest the Paterberg 20 seconds ahead of Van Aert. The group is close behind the Flemish rider.
While Van der Poel and Asgreen extend their lead to 30 seconds the chasers catch Van Aert.
Van der Poel opens the sprint but the tile defender misses the punch to take the win. Asgreen overhauls him in the dying metres to win the second Monument of 2021.
Van Avermaet bests Stuyven in the battle for the third place.
